Treating Your Child's Fever

Treating Your Child's Fever

A fever is the body’s way of responding to an infection and can make your child uncomfortable and irritable. Here are some tips to help you take control of your child’s fever.

Dress your child for recovery:

When your child has a fever, it is important that you dress him or her lightly. Make sure you DO NOT overdress or cover him or her with heavy blankets and quilts. Overheating your child can actually increase the fever.

Keep your child hydrated:

Encourage your child to drink lots of fluids when he or she has a fever. A fever can cause your child to lose fluids and may lead to dehydration. Water, soup, even ice pops or flavored gelatin are all helpful.

No cold baths, please:

Although it may be a common practice, it is NOT a good idea to give your child a cold bath in order to reduce the temperature when he or she has a fever. The cool water may cause shivering, which will raise the body’s temperature.

Choose Children’s Advil:

You’ve done almost everything you can, but their fever hasn’t gone down. Reduce your child’s fever fast with Children’s Advil. It reduces fevers faster* and longer than Children’s Tylenol.
